The Invention of Lying

(2009)Directed by Ricky Gervais, Matthew Robinson100 min · PG-13Comedy, Fantasy, Romance
“In a world where everyone can only tell the truth... This guy can lie.”

In this world nobody has ever lied, so a stranger on a first date will tell you she doesn't see a future with you. Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) is a screenwriter about to lose his job and his apartment, until one afternoon he says a sentence that isn't true and everyone believes it. Gervais and Matthew Robinson keep the camera on Mark's face afterward, a pudgy man in a rumpled jacket with Anna McDoogles (Jennifer Garner) across the table.
