A surveyor and his young son ride west to chart a route for a railway, and they find a new pass that would cut 200 miles from the line. A party of Cheyenne catches them there, and the man who kills the father is a white renegade missing two fingers on his right hand. Davy Brandon (George O'Brien) is left alone with that detail, and John Ford shoots the long road to the Pacific on a scale he had never been given before.
