In Wyoming Territory, a horse trader named Myrl Redding (John Cusack) leaves two of his horses with a neighboring rancher and gets them back abused. He takes the matter to Judge Tolliver (John Goodman), but the law refuses to punish a man with standing in the community. John Badham keeps it a story about what one man will give up when the courts treat a wrong as nothing, and justice and revenge begin to look alike.
