Nobody at Folsom State Prison can explain Larry "Rain" Murphy (Peter Strauss), a lifer who keeps to himself and spends his free hours running laps of the yard. Michael Mann shot it inside the real prison among the real inmates, and a clock shows up that suggests Rain may be among the fastest milers alive. The only man who gets close to him is "Cotton" Crown (Roger E. Mosley), who sees what the running is worth.
