Lindo Jong (Tsai Chin) is one of four Chinese immigrants in San Francisco who meet to play mahjong and tell stories, and each has an adult daughter born in America. Wayne Wang moves between the women's lives in feudal China and the daughters' lives now, with Suyuan Wong (Kieu Chinh) and An-Mei Hsu (Lisa Lu) among the mothers whose pasts the daughters have never been told. Every story the mothers hold back is a distance the daughters have yet to cross.
