“They were all drawn to the keep. Tonight, they will all face the evil.”

In 1941, a German garrison led by Captain Klaus Woermann (Jürgen Prochnow) takes up quarters in an ancient stone fortress guarding a mountain pass in Romania's Carpathians. Two soldiers pry at the walls looking for treasure, and a mysterious entity that kills or corrupts those it touches gets out. Michael Mann sets a Gestapo major (Gabriel Byrne) and a Jewish scholar against it, with every soldier still in the village within its reach.
