New York, 1947. Sheila Bennet (Evelyn Keyes) and her husband Matt Krane (Charles Korvin) are trying to sell a stash of rare jewels they smuggled in from Cuba, with the police close behind. Earl McEvoy shot on location in a semi-documentary style, tracking health officials as they hunt one unknown person spreading smallpox through the city. The danger moves from stranger to stranger, and no one in the crowd can tell who is carrying it.
