Jim Reardon (Edmond O'Brien), an insurance investigator, can't leave one killing alone: a man called the Swede (Burt Lancaster), shot in his rented room by two hired guns while he lay waiting for them. Robert Siodmak traces the dead man's life backward through Kitty Collins (Ava Gardner) and a bank job. Every witness hands Reardon another piece of a man who had already given up before the killers arrived.
