Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) has done time and wants out, with one last job to pay for it: the cash room at a racetrack, and a crew of specialists he has to bring together. Stanley Kubrick sets the plan in motion with a sharpshooter, a crooked cop, a bartender and a betting teller named George, the last with a restless wife. Every one of them is gambling that the money will change what they are.
