Cosmo Vittelli (Ben Gazzara) loses more than he can pay at an underground casino run by the mobster Mort (Seymour Cassel). Mort offers to wipe the debt if Cosmo will kill a bookie the Mafia protects. John Cassavetes follows him back to the low-rent Hollywood cabaret he owns, where Cosmo still has to run the show for the women and the staff he cares about.
