Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr), a widowed Welsh schoolteacher, crosses the sea to Siam in the early 1860s with a post waiting for her. She is to teach English and manners to the wives and many children of King Mongkut (Yul Brynner), a man who does not take correction from anyone. Walter Lang fills the palace with silk and gold, and Anna has one party to prepare for the European diplomats before they decide the King is a barbarian.
