The King of Comedy

(1982)Directed by Martin Scorsese109 min · PGDrama, Comedy
“It's no laughing matter.”

In early 1980s New York, Rupert Pupkin (Robert De Niro) wants to be a stand-up comedian and rehearses his act in a basement, talking to cardboard cutouts. His idol is Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis), a late-night talk-show host who wants nothing to do with him, and Martin Scorsese follows Rupert's attempts to get close anyway. The one person who matches his hunger is Masha (Sandra Bernhard), and the two of them push each other further.
