“What on Earth can hold more power than a king?”

At the court of Versailles, King Louis XIV (Pierce Brosnan) is chasing immortality, and his men have captured a mermaid whose life force he means to take. Marie-Josèphe (Kaya Scodelario), the king's illegitimate daughter, finds the creature in captivity, and Sean McNamara sends her into the fight over it. Underneath the spectacle sits one plain question: how far a man will go to avoid dying.
