In 1913, as the great powers of Europe edge toward war, Oxford (Ralph Fiennes), a pacifist nobleman, tries to prevent the conflict through diplomacy. He uncovers a shadowy conspiracy that leads him to the mad monk Rasputin (Rhys Ifans) and the crowned heads behind the chaos. Vaughn floods the screen with period spectacle and violence until Oxford stands alone in a gilded hall, the machinery of war finally set in motion around him.
