King George VI (Colin Firth) stammers so badly he dreads public speech, yet he must address the nation as war with Germany looms. He hires Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), an unorthodox Australian speech therapist who treats the king less like royalty and more like a man with a fixable problem. Hooper frames the sessions in close-ups, letting the stammer become visible as an obstacle the two men work through together, breath by breath.
