Amir (Khalid Abdalla) grew up a well-off boy in Kabul and has lived for years in California, carrying guilt over abandoning his friend Hassan. A call from Rahim Kahn (Shaun Toub) pulls him back to Afghanistan, where Hassan's son is in trouble. Marc Forster sets Amir's return against the fall of the monarchy, the Soviet invasion and the Taliban, and the debt between the two boys still hasn't been paid.
