“When you deal a fast shuffle, love is in the cards.”

Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck) is a con artist who has her eye on a fortune, and she finds it on an ocean liner in Charles Pike (Henry Fonda), a wealthy, awkward heir. She and her father, the 'Colonel' (Charles Coburn), are there to work him for everything he has. Preston Sturges sets the game going, but Jean has started to care for her mark, and that puts the whole scheme at risk.
