Polly Franklin (Pamela Sue Martin) leaves her family's farm for Chicago and lands in a string of bad jobs that lead her into prostitution. Lewis Teague stages her slide through the city's nightlife, with John Dillinger (Robert Conrad) and Anna Sage (Louise Fletcher) waiting in the same crime world that has already taken hold of her. John Sayles wrote it from the life of Polly Hamilton, and every step further in leaves her less able to get out.
