An avalanche strands a trainload of travelers in a hotel in a fictional European country, and there young Iris Matilda Henderson (Margaret Lockwood) befriends the elderly Miss Froy (May Whitty). Back on the train, Iris blacks out, and when she wakes the old woman is gone, and every passenger swears no Miss Froy was ever aboard. Hitchcock sets her against that wall of denial, with only the musicologist Gilbert Redman (Michael Redgrave) willing to believe her.
