“How do you hold on to someone you've never met?”

Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves), an architect in 2004, finds a letter in the mailbox of a lake house from Dr. Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock), who will live there two years in the future. They begin writing back and forth across the gap in time, each leaving notes for the other to find. As their correspondence deepens into love, they realize that closing the distance between them might erase the very moments that brought them together.
