The Last Command

(1928)Directed by Josef von Sternberg88 minDrama, History, War

General Dolgorucki (Emil Jannings), once a cousin of the Czar and a commander in the Imperial Russian army, now works as a Hollywood extra, hoping for a day's pay and a part. The director who casts him is Lev Andreyev (William Powell), a former revolutionary who knows exactly who the old man used to be. Josef von Sternberg follows the general through the studio lot in a worn uniform, still standing like a soldier, still answering to a rank nobody else recognizes.
