“No *#@!!* Navy’s going to give some poor **!!@* kid eight years in the #@!* brig without me taking him out for the time of his *#@!!* life.”

In the early 1970s, two career Navy men are given what looks like easy duty: escort a young sailor from their Virginia base to Portsmouth Naval Prison in Maine. Billy "Badass" Buddusky (Jack Nicholson) and Richard "Mule" Mulhall (Otis Young) take charge of the quiet, withdrawn Larry Meadows (Randy Quaid) and decide he should have one last good time on the way. Hal Ashby shoots the trip in plain, grainy light and lets the scenes wander as the three of them do.
