In Italy in 2001, Carlo (Stefano Accorsi) and Giulia (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) have been together three years and are happy. Then Giulia says she is pregnant, and Carlo tells no one how frightened he is. Gabriele Muccino follows him to a wedding, where he meets Francesca (Martina Stella), eighteen years old, and he starts looking for a way out of the life he is about to be handed.
