The Last Samurai

(2003)Directed by Edward Zwick154 min · RDrama, Action, War
“In the face of an enemy, in the heart of one man, lies the soul of a warrior.”

Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is an American soldier worn down by what he has done in war, and he takes a job training the Japanese army in modern fighting. His work puts him against the samurai of Moritsugu Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe), a proud holdout against the new order. Edward Zwick gives most of the film to the bond between the two men, the soldier and the warrior he was hired to defeat.
