Ronnie Miller (Miley Cyrus) arrives at her father's beach house for the summer, angry at him for the divorce. She meets Will Blakelee (Liam Hemsworth), a local who knows how to wait her out, and her father Steve (Greg Kinnear) begins leaving small invitations she almost accepts. Over the season, the distance between them closes in the way distance does when no one is looking, through shared meals and the simple fact of being near.
