Charles Wills (Van Johnson) is an American reporter in Paris at the end of the war, and he wants to be a novelist. He falls for Helen Ellswirth (Elizabeth Taylor) after a short flirtation with her sister, Marion (Donna Reed), then marries her and takes a dull wire-service job to keep them going. Richard Brooks, adapting an F. Scott Fitzgerald story, puts Charles and Helen's love under strain once money enters the marriage.
