Nobody in the New Mexico Territory can quite explain why a drifter's murder should set off so much killing, but it does. The employer of William "Billy the Kid" Bonney (Paul Newman) is shot by a crooked sheriff, and Billy goes after the man, putting Governor Wallace's amnesty in danger. In Arthur Penn's debut, the one steady presence beside Billy is Pat Garrett (John Dehner), a friend who rides the same ground.
