The Legend of the Suram Fortress

(1985)Directed by Sergei Parajanov, David Abashidze83 minDrama, History

In Georgia, a fortress keeps collapsing, and the builders are told it will only stand if a young man is walled up inside it. A Fortune Teller (Veriko Anjaparidze) and Osman-Agha (David Abashidze) are among the people drawn into the folk-tale as it is staged, in a series of still tableaux with very little dialogue. Sergei Parajanov and David Abashidze made it as his first film after fifteen years of censorship, and a boy's life is the price of the wall.
