A gang led by Butch Cavendish (Christopher Lloyd) springs an ambush on a company of Texas Rangers and leaves John Reid (Klinton Spilsbury) as the only man still breathing. His childhood friend Tonto, a Comanche, finds him and nurses him back, and William A. Fraker then sets the pair riding after Cavendish, who has taken President Grant (Jason Robards) hostage. Reid recovers, pulls on the mask, and decides to spend his life against everything Cavendish stands for.
