The Life of Oharu

(1952)Directed by Kenji Mizoguchi136 minDrama

An old woman (Kinuyo Tanaka) sits among the Buddhist statues of a temple in Kyoto, and we are made to wonder how Oharu came to this. In the Edo period she was a noblewoman at court, until her love for a lowly page, Katsunosuke (Toshirō Mifune), got them both banished. Kenji Mizoguchi follows what her father and the men around her make of her afterward, and the film ends on a bare doorway and the dark beyond it.
