San Francisco in the late 1950s, shot on location along the Embarcadero, in Golden Gate Park and at the Sutro Baths. Dancer (Eli Wallach), a psychopathic gangster, and his mentor Julian (Robert Keith) collect heroin packages from travelers who have no idea they are carrying them. Don Siegel follows the two men through the city, where the work depends on ordinary people never looking closely at what they hold.
