“What family doesn't have its ups and downs?”

Henry II (Peter O'Toole), King of England, wants to name his successor, and he wants it to be his youngest son, John (Nigel Terry). Christmas 1183 brings the family to his court, among them his estranged wife Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn), who has backed Richard (Anthony Hopkins) for the crown. Anthony Harvey keeps the holiday gathering a contest of sons, wives and rivals, where affection and ambition are the same thing.
