The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid (Miroslava Šafránková) is a sea nymph who pulls a drowning prince (Petr Svojtka) out of the water and cannot stop thinking about him. To live on land beside him, she bargains with the sorceress (Milena Dvorská) and gives up her voice. Karel Kachyňa follows Andersen's 1837 fairy tale closely, and his mermaids have legs, not tails, and look on humans with open disdain.
