“America's Little Sweetheart . . . The Dimpled Darling You Love in the Greatest of Civil War Dramas !”

On a Southern plantation at the start of the Civil War, young Virgie Cary (Shirley Temple) lives in a rundown house with her mother and her father, a rebel officer. David Butler follows the family as Captain Cary (John Boles) slips home in secret to see his dying wife, and a Yankee colonel (Jack Holt) takes notice. Virgie stands in the worn parlor in her ruffled dress, small against the faded walls.
