In 1984 East Berlin, Stasi officer Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe) is assigned to listen in on the playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and his lover, the actress Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck). Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, in his first feature, follows the headphones and the typed reports. Wiesler's loyalties pull in two directions, and both could cost Dreyman and Christa-Maria their careers, or worse.
