In Victorian London, Robert (Cedric Hardwicke) and Ellen Bonting (Sara Allgood) let the rooms above their home to a new tenant, Mr. Slade (Laird Cregar). The city is already afraid of Jack the Ripper, and soon the household begins to wonder about the quiet man upstairs.
