A detective is working a string of killings along West Hollywood's Sunset Strip, where the victims are prostitutes and the methods match those of Jack the Ripper. David Ondaatje adapts Marie Belloc Lowndes's 1913 novel, with Alfred Molina as the detective, Chandler Manning, and Hope Davis as Ellen Bunting. Molina sits over the case files, the rain-slicked Strip beyond his window, the same wounds turning up in an older case.
