“Never take off the mask.”

John Reid (Armie Hammer) is a lawman who believes in courts and trials, until Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) and his gang ambush the Texas Rangers and leave him for dead. Tonto (Johnny Depp) finds the lone survivor and nurses him back, and Gore Verbinski sets the pair on the outlaws' trail across a sun-bleached frontier. Reid pulls on a mask, Tonto does the talking, and the partnership is an uneasy one.
