The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne

Why does a woman who owns almost nothing keep a locked front on her dignity in a rented room in 1950s Dublin? Judith Hearne (Maggie Smith) gives piano lessons to scrape by, and she makes one last bid for love with James Madden (Bob Hoskins), a fellow lodger who assumes she has money to fund the business he wants to open. Jack Clayton films her loneliness plainly: a person who needs to be wanted, and the price she pays for pretending.
