A friend's wife is dead, and the police want the friend. Philip Marlowe (Elliott Gould), a private detective drifting through 1970s Hollywood, sets out to clear him. Robert Altman, adapting Raymond Chandler's novel, sends him into a city that shrugs at him, with Eileen Wade (Nina van Pallandt) and Marty Augustine (Mark Rydell) circling, and Marlowe's loyalty to one man is all he has to hold onto.
