Ben Quick (Paul Newman), a drifter with a barn-burning reputation, rolls into a small Mississippi town wanting a place at the table of its richest family. He talks his way into the Varner house, where Will Varner (Orson Welles) runs everything and his daughter Clara (Joanne Woodward) keeps her distance. Martin Ritt sets the story in Faulkner country, where a family's pride and its money have always been the same thing.
