October 1918, the Argonne Forest, France, in the last weeks of the First World War. Major Charles Whittlesey (Ricky Schroder) leads more than five hundred American soldiers deep into the trees, and the German lines close behind them. Russell Mulcahy keeps the focus on Whittlesey and Captain George McMurtry (Phil McKee), two officers who have to hold the men together and still trust each other.
