“The motion picture with something to offend everyone!”

Dennis Barlow (Robert Morse) is an English poet living in California when his expatriate uncle kills himself, and the burial arrangements pull him into the funeral business. Tony Richardson shoots the Los Angeles undertakers in black and white and plays their solemn manners with a perfectly straight face. Dennis has a young woman to win, a fee to pay, and a poet's name to protect from a trade that wants him on its payroll.
