The Lover

In 1929 French Indochina, a poor French teenager known only as the Young Girl (Jane March) begins a secret affair with a wealthy Chinese heir (Tony Leung Ka-fai). Jean-Jacques Annaud follows their clandestine meetings through Saigon, where she holds the control she has never had anywhere else in her life. The film treats first love as a thing taken before anyone has decided what it will cost.
