The Lovers of Montparnasse

(1958)Directed by Jacques Becker108 minRomance, Drama, History

Amedeo Modigliani (Gérard Philipe) is nobody's idea of a famous painter in 1919, just an Italian in Montparnasse with a bad cough and a reputation for drinking. Then he falls in love with a girl from a wealthy family, and her parents cut off the money that kept him going. Jacques Becker follows the last year of his life, with the dealer Léopold Sborowsky (Gérard Séty) still circling, while Modigliani paints on in poverty.
