The Lower Depths

(1957)Directed by Akira Kurosawa125 minDrama

Sutekichi (Toshirō Mifune), a thief, ends his affair with Osugi (Isuzu Yamada), the landlady of a rundown boardinghouse in Edo-period Japan, and starts courting her younger sister Okayo (Kyōko Kagawa). Osugi answers by telling her jealous husband Rokubei (Ganjirō Nakamura II) everything. Kurosawa adapts Gorky's play, and a house full of lodgers, among them a former samurai and an aging actor, watches as the trouble builds.
