The Machine That Kills Bad People

(1952)Directed by Roberto Rossellini85 minComedy, Fantasy

Celestino Esposito (Gennaro Pisano) is the local photographer in Amalfi, a village on the Italian coast, and he has little to his name beyond a camera. Then an old man who seems to have strange powers hands him a dangerous ability to go with it. Roberto Rossellini, fresh from Rome, Open City, leaves the neorealist manner behind here and turns the same coastal village into a fantasy comedy played in an unhurried, deadpan key.
