In 1788, King George III (Nigel Hawthorne) begins to behave strangely, shifting between confusion and sudden fits of temper that no one around him can explain. Nicholas Hytner follows the court as Queen Charlotte (Helen Mirren) and the prime minister work to keep the throne from the Prince of Wales, while the doctors try useless cures. Under the powdered wigs and the jokes, it is a story about how little a crown protects a man from his own mind.
