The Magdalene Sisters

(2002)Directed by Peter Mullan119 min · RDrama, History
“In a place that defied belief their only hope was each other.”

Margaret (Anne-Marie Duff), Bernadette (Nora-Jane Noone) and Rose (Dorothy Duffy) are teenage girls in Ireland, each one sent by family or society to a Magdalene asylum for being labelled "fallen." The homes were run by religious orders, and Sister Bridget (Geraldine McEwan) keeps order inside the walls. Peter Mullan wrote and directed the film, and he stays close to the girls' faces while the days press in.
