Albert Emanuel Vogler (Max von Sydow) and his troupe roll into a Swedish town in the 1840s, where the local authorities have gathered to examine what they do before they are allowed to perform. Dr. Vergerus (Gunnar Björnstrand), the Minister of Health, has no patience for tricks sold as mystery. Bergman puts the troupe's whole livelihood on the line, because if the doctor and the officials are not convinced, there is nowhere left for them to go.
